Adding a Custom Skin in Minecraft

Below we’ll outline the steps to add a custom skin to your Minecraft character. The site used is just an example with a large range to choose from.

Select your skin

  • There are three ways of getting a skin once you’re in the Skindex:
    • Browse through random skins
    • Search for a theme or idea you want your skin to have
    • Make your own skin

Browse through random skins

  • Go to “Top”, “Latest”, or “Recently commented” at the top of the website. This will get you to different skins.
  • Scroll through these pages until you see a skin you like, then click on it.
  • This will take you to a page with the skin. If you wish to edit the skin, you can click the “edit skin” button on the right side of the screen, which will take you to a page where you can edit the skin. This page will take a similar format to that used for making your own skin.

Search for a theme or idea for your skin

  • Type a word or phrase into the search bar at the top of the screen that you want to apply to your skin, e.g. “Horse” or “Sci Fi”. It can be as specific or as general as you like. This will get you skins related to that topic.
  • Scroll through these skins until you see one you want, then click on it.
  • This will take you to a page with the skin. If you wish to edit the skin, you can click the “edit skin” button on the right side of the screen, which will take you to a page where you can edit the skin. This page will take a similar format to that used for making your own skin.

Make your own skin

  • This option is the most difficult, but you get a personalized skin.
  • Click on “Editor” at the top of the website. This will take you to a screen with a series of tools along the left, a color picker on the right, and a grid shaped like a Minecraft character in the middle.
  • Use the “body” and “outer layer” buttons on the right to change what you are editing.
Use the tools on the left to paint your skin, changing the color with the tool on the right.
Make sure you spin the figure around so that you paint the whole thing. The outlines in the lower right of the screen allow you to hide aspects of the figure so you can access parts like the inside of the legs.
Consider shadows when painting areas like the bottom of the feet.

Download skin

  • Once you are happy with the skin you have chosen, click the “download” button. The location of this button will vary, but it is always on the right side of the screen. This will put your skin into the “downloads” folder of your computer.

Open Minecraft

  • Go to the Minecraft launcher and go to the “Skins” tab. Click on “New skin”. This will take you to a page where you can add your new skin.

Name and save

  • Name your skin, choose a body type, then click “Browse”. Find your new skin in your “downloads” folder, and select it.
  • Click “Save & Use” and your new skin will be activated next time you enter Minecraft.
